Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to get pregnant?

On average, it can take couples between eight and twelve months to conceive naturally. If you've been trying for a while, it's worth checking whether any of the factors most commonly associated with difficulties conceiving might apply to you. Our 10-step plan for getting pregnant faster has practical steps you can start today.

When am I most fertile during my cycle?
You're most fertile around the time of ovulation, when the egg is released from the ovaries. Depending on your cycle length, this occurs at different times for everyone, generally around 12 to 16 days before your next period starts. Sperm can live inside the body for up to 5 days, so having regular sex throughout your cycle can boost your chances of conception, as sperm will already be present and ready to fertilise when the egg is released.
Can supplements enhance fertility?
The correct nutrient intake is vital for producing adequate sperm, ovulating regularly, and maintaining a pregnancy. Taking nutritional supplements can help support a balanced diet, ensuring you have the nutrient reserves needed for fertility, particularly for nutrients that can be harder to get enough of through food alone. That said, no supplement can guarantee a specific outcome, and individual results will vary depending on your own circumstances.
What is the best supplement for fertility?

The best supplement depends on your individual health and fertility goals, so this can vary from person to person. However, for those just starting out, we'd recommend Vitafem for women and Vitamen for men, covering the core nutritional requirements for preconception. Vital DHA, Vitamin D Spray, Menceive and Femceive are also commonly recommended alongside these, formulated to work together to support you as you start trying. What age are men most fertile?
Men continue to produce sperm throughout their life, but sperm quality tends to decline with age, typically peaking between 30 and 35. Diet, stress, alcohol, smoking and exercise can all affect sperm quality, so it's worth supporting sperm health at least three months before trying, regardless of age.
Does stress affect my fertility?
Trying for a baby, or going through fertility treatment, can be a stressful time, and research does suggest high stress may lower fertility chances. While stress is largely unavoidable, finding ways to unwind, such as reading, meditation or walking, can help. It's also worth avoiding hot baths or hot tubs when trying to conceive, as heat may affect sperm quality.
When should we start taking supplements before trying for a baby?
We recommend starting at least three months before you begin trying, in line with the 90 day egg maturation window and the 74 day sperm development cycle. Zinc contributes to normal fertility and reproduction, and Selenium contributes to normal spermatogenesis. The NHS recommends women start taking Folic Acid before they stop contraception.
