After everything it took to get here, you may have expected pure excitement and joy. But instead, you might find yourself feeling a mix of happiness, disbelief, anxiety and even fear.
If this sounds familiar, you are not alone. Many people who conceive after fertility struggles experience a unique kind of emotional rollercoaster that is rarely talked about.
The road to pregnancy can be physically and emotionally exhausting. When you’ve spent months or even years trying to conceive, it’s natural to develop a protective mindset, bracing yourself for disappointment. So when that long-awaited positive test finally arrives, it can feel surreal or even fragile.
If you’re feeling anxious, know that your emotions are completely valid. You are not being negative or ungrateful, you are processing a huge life shift after a challenging journey.
The good news is, you don’t have to stay stuck in fear. Here are some gentle, practical ways to ease anxiety and help you embrace this chapter with more confidence and calm.
1. Build a Support System That Truly Understands
Having the right support can make a huge difference. Well-meaning friends and family may say things like "Just enjoy it now!" but they might not fully grasp what you’ve been through. Find people who do understand.
Consider joining a support group for pregnancy after infertility, either online or in person. Connect with a therapist who specialises in reproductive health. Follow social media accounts that share positive, encouraging content for people on similar journeys. Surround yourself with people who validate your feelings rather than dismiss them.
2. Allow Yourself to Feel Everything Without Judgement
You don’t have to feel over-the-moon happy all the time. Joy and anxiety can absolutely exist together. Some days you’ll feel hopeful and excited; other days, you may feel nervous or unsure. This is completely normal.
Instead of pushing away difficult emotions, try to acknowledge them gently. Journaling, meditation, or speaking with someone you trust can help you process what you’re feeling without shame.
3. Focus on What You Can Control
Pregnancy is naturally unpredictable, and that can be overwhelming — especially when you’ve fought so hard to get here. Instead of worrying about what might happen, focus on the things you do have control over:
• Eating nourishing food
• Resting when you need to
• Attending your antenatal appointments and asking all the questions you want
• Practising gentle relaxation like breathing exercises, pregnancy yoga or short walks
Every small act of care helps build trust in yourself and your body.
4. Create Small Rituals to Connect with Your Pregnancy
If you’ve experienced infertility, it can sometimes feel hard to bond with your pregnancy, out of fear that it might not last. But allowing yourself to connect, even in tiny ways, can bring comfort and joy.
Consider placing your hands on your bump and saying kind words to your baby. Keep a pregnancy journal to write down how you’re feeling or track little milestones. Play calming music and take time to breathe and rest. These small rituals can help shift your focus from fear to love and presence.
5. Be Mindful of What You Consume
Protecting your mental space is important. If scrolling through forums or hearing difficult stories makes you feel more anxious, give yourself permission to take a break.
Unfollow accounts or groups that leave you feeling unsettled. Set boundaries with people who ask invasive or stressful questions. And instead, seek out content that makes you feel calm, supported and hopeful, whether that’s uplifting birth stories, gentle podcasts, or simply listening to music that soothes you.
If you are pregnant after assisted fertility, please remember: your feelings are valid, your journey is unique, and you are not alone. It’s okay to feel cautious. It’s okay to feel excited. It’s okay to feel everything in between.
Take each day as it comes, and focus on what is true right now, in this moment. You have come so far, and you deserve to experience this chapter with as much peace and joy as possible.
