Q: Can vitamin D deficiency impact fertility?

Research has explored whether vitamin D deficiency may be linked to infertility and pregnancy complications, although the evidence is still developing. No single nutrient can guarantee a successful pregnancy or improve fertility outcomes on its own, but maintaining adequate vitamin D levels is an important part of supporting your overall health, both when trying to conceive and for a healthy pregnancy. Vitamin D contributes to the normal function of the immune system and has a role in the process of cell division.

Q: What is the difference between folate and folic acid?

Folate is the natural form of vitamin B9 found in foods such as leafy green vegetables, citrus fruits and beans. Food folate is an important part of a healthy diet, although it is generally less well absorbed than folic acid. Before folic acid can be utilised by the body it must be converted into the active form of folate. This conversion depends on an enzyme called MTHFR (methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase). A significant proportion of the population carry a common variation in the MTHFR gene, which lowers the activity of this enzyme, meaning they have a reduced capacity to transform folic acid into the active form. We use Quatrefolic in our supplements containing folate. It is the active form of folate, 5-MTHF, readily available for transport and use in the human body and tissues. Quatrefolic doesn't require conversion by the enzyme MTHFR and can therefore effectively raise folate levels, including in those with an MTHFR variation.

Q: Why should I take a vitamin D supplement?

While some vitamin D can be obtained through sunlight exposure and dietary sources, many people may not get enough through these methods alone. Therefore, taking a vitamin D supplement can be an effective way to ensure adequate levels and support overall reproductive health and foetal development, and is recommended by the NHS.

Q: Why is folic acid recommended by the NHS?

The NHS recommends taking a folic acid supplement from before you conceive until 12 weeks of pregnancy, as it reduces the risk of neural tube defects. We use Quatrefolic®, which provides folate in its active form, 5-MTHF, which the body can use directly without needing to convert it first. Because Quatrefolic® is already in its active form and doesn't require the same conversion process as folic acid, it is often recommended as the preferred option, particularly for those who have difficulty converting folic acid into its active form.

Q: How much Vitamin D should I take during pregnancy?

The NHS recommends taking a supplement of 400 IU (10µg) of vitamin D per day. Our Vitamin D Spray delivers 1,000 IU (25µg) per spray, which is safe to take throughout pregnancy and well within the NHS advised maximum of 100µg a day.
