Zita West’s range of pregnancy supplements for the first trimester are formulated by our experts to support you and your baby through the early stages of pregnancy. The first three months of pregnancy are often the most vital, as this is when all organs, systems, hands, feet and limbs form.
The baby will grow rapidly during the first trimester but is also at its most vulnerable. Researchers now recognise that a mother’s diet before conception and during the first trimester can influence how the embryo develops in the womb.
Our collection of first trimester pregnancy supplements is beneficial for women as they contain all the micro-nutrients to meet the demands of early pregnancy. Trimester one lays the foundation for a healthy pregnancy. It’s also essential to continue developing a healthy placenta during trimester one to improve the exchange of nutrients and oxygen.
Zita West is an internationally renowned fertility expert with over 30 years of experience assisting couples with conception and pregnancy. For further advice, including which foods to add to your diet during trimester one, check out our first trimester nutrition guide.
Yes, pregnancy supplements are highly recommended in the first trimester to ensure both the mother and the developing foetus receive the required nutrients during the foundation stages of pregnancy. This will help foetal development.
The Trimester 1 Pregnancy Support Pack contains all the first trimester pregnancy supplements we recommend. This includes multivitamins, minerals, essential fats, omega-3 and vitamin D. Our Vital DHA contains omega-3 essential fatty acids (EFAs) plus a small amount of Zinc. This will play a vital role in the baby’s brain development. Zita West’s Vital Essence 1 has been specially formulated to support mother and baby during the first trimester as it contains 400μg of Folic Acid in the active form Folate.
During the first trimester of pregnancy, supplements such as folate prevent neural tube defects. Choline is essential for the production of cell membranes and cell division. DHA Omega-3 and iodine help the development of the baby’s brain. B vitamins help the mother convert food into energy, while Zinc is vital for tissue growth and repair and the immune system. Other supplements can help the overall well-being for both the mother and the baby.
The NHS recommends 400 micrograms of folic acid daily from conception until the mother is 12 weeks pregnant. Each serving of our Vital Essence 1 contains the recommended amount of folic acid.
No more than 30mg of zinc is recommended during pregnancy
We recommend the following supplements at 5 weeks of pregnancy:
Vital Essence 1 – a premium multivitamin containing all the vitamins and minerals recommended throughout this phase, including 400mg folate (a more readily absorbable form of folic acid)
Vital DHA - Contains EFAs, which are important in the development of healthy cells and body tissue during pregnancy and DHA (Docosahexaenoic Acid), which plays a critical role in the development of a baby’s brain during pregnancy and early infancy
Vitamin D - Helps your baby's bones, teeth, kidneys, heart and nervous system to develop
The first three months of pregnancy are in many ways the most crucial stage of a baby’s development – the time when all of his or her organs and systems are forming, as well as hands, feet, and limbs. It is now recognised that a mother’s diet immediately before conception and in the first weeks of pregnancy can influence the way that the embryo develops.
The new formulation of Vital Essence 1 supplies all the micro-nutrients that are most important to meet the demands of early pregnancy, including 400ug of Folate (now in the superior L-Methylfolate form and useful for a whole range of cellular activities, not just for helping to minimise the risk of spina bifida) plus lots of protective ingredients such as Beta Carotene (a safe way to help support your intake of Vitamin A), Copper, Magnesium, Manganese and Zinc, all of which support normal cell division and help to protect DNA.
We recommend that it should be taken in conjunction with Vital DHA for maximum benefit to your overall nutrition.
Vitamin D - Helps your baby's bones, teeth, kidneys, heart and nervous system to develop

Yes, you can take a multivitamin during early pregnancy. However, we recommend taking a trimester specific multivitamin, to ensure that you are not consuming too high a dose of vitamin A.
