Egg Quality and Oxidative Stress: The Science Behind Vitafem Boost
Posted on
While ovarian reserve often takes centre stage in fertility discussions, egg quality is equally critical. As Zita West often says, “It just takes one egg to get pregnant.” The microenvironment in which an egg matures, including its exposure to oxidative stress, can significantly influence its developmental potential. Vitafem Boost is an antioxidant complex designed to support this environment by reducing free radical damage.
What is Oxidative Stress in the Follicular Environment?
Oxidative stress in follicular fluid occurs when there is an imbalance between reactive oxygen species (ROS) production and the body's ability to neutralise them. These ROS can damage cellular structures, including oocyte DNA, and alter the follicular microenvironment.
Research shows that increased oxidative stress in the ovary is associated with:
- Reduced oocyte quality
- Lower fertilisation rates
- DNA damage in developing eggs
- Disruption of cellular signalling and microenvironmental balance
These changes can ultimately impair pregnancy outcomes [1].
Antioxidants and Egg Quality
Several micronutrients and phytochemicals have antioxidant properties shown to benefit oocyte development and the follicular environment:
- Vitamin A: Supports cell differentiation and acts as an antioxidant
- Vitamin C: Antioxidant cofactor aiding oxidases and tissue repair
- Vitamin E: Maintains membrane integrity and modulates cell signalling
- Folate (Vitamin B9): Essential for DNA synthesis and methylation
- Selenium: Integral to glutathione peroxidase, a key intracellular antioxidant enzyme
- Zinc: Regulates gene expression, enzyme activity, and antioxidant defences
- L-carnitine: Supports mitochondrial energy metabolism
- Quercetin: Offers anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects
- Resveratrol: Modulates cellular signalling and immune function
When is Antioxidant Support Most Relevant?
Supplementation with antioxidants is especially important in the following scenarios:
- 3 months prior to TTC: Supports the full cycle of oocyte maturation
- During ART: Particularly important before egg retrieval and embryo transfer
Safety and Use
Vitafem Boost is suitable for use alongside other Zita West products. However, it is not a complete multivitamin and does not contain folic acid. It is intended to complement a pre-existing fertility supplement routine.
